Peugeot 208 1.2 PureTech wet belt replacement in Royston

The 1.2 PureTech in the Peugeot 208 runs its timing belt in the engine oil. We replace it for £650 fixed in Royston, clean the oil pick-up so no debris is left behind, and refill with the correct oil. We check your 208's engine from the reg first.

Which Peugeot 208s have the wet belt

Both generations of 208 with the 1.2 PureTech petrol are on the list: the first 208 from 2012, and the second-generation car from 2019. That covers both the non-turbo PureTech and the Turbo PureTech. Peugeot's own engine specification for the Turbo PureTech lists a wet timing belt.

Stellantis's own claim rules cover non-turbo PureTech engines built from June 2012 to June 2022 and turbo engines from April 2014 to June 2022, which tells you how long the belt engine was in production.

The exception is new. Peugeot's Turbo 100 engine, which has a timing chain, went into the 208 from March 2026. Some other late versions with the EB2LTED engine codes also use a chain. Send the reg and we will confirm which one you have.

What happens when a 208 belt wears

As the belt ages in the oil it sheds material. Those particles can block the oil pump strainer and the valve timing solenoids. On some 208s the brake vacuum pump has been affected too: DVSA recalls for the Peugeot 208 and other models say the vacuum pump can be affected by material coming off the timing belt as the oil ages, which reduces brake assistance.

Short trips make it worse. Fuel gets into the oil when the engine never fully warms up, and the belt does not like that. A 208 used for school runs and town driving around Royston is exactly that sort of car.

What the £650 208 job includes

OE-spec belt kit

New wet belt and the matching tensioner parts for the 208's PureTech.

Locking tools

Cams and crank locked with the PureTech timing tools, with new bolts where the procedure calls for them.

Strainer cleaned

Oil pick-up strainer cleaned so old belt debris cannot cut the oil pressure.

Correct oil

PSA-approved 5W30 and a new filter. The wrong oil is hard on this belt.

Water pump: your choice

The water pump is not part of the belt job. It is an optional extra, quoted first.

Warranty

Every wet belt replacement comes with our own 12-month / 12,000-mile parts and labour warranty, honoured at our Royston and Swindon workshops.

When to book your 208

Peugeot's revised schedule from April 2017 is 6 years or 100,000 km (about 62,000 miles) in normal use, with belt checks at services. Older service books show longer figures, so check your service schedule; we can confirm from your reg.

Book sooner if the oil pressure light has flickered, the engine light is on, the brake pedal feels unusually hard, or a service has flagged the belt as worn. If the brake pedal goes hard, get the car checked before you drive it far.
