Which 1.0 EcoBoost engines we cover

The early 1.0 EcoBoost uses a belt-in-oil cam drive. Later revised engines switched the cam drive to a chain. Send the registration and we will confirm which layout you have before we quote.

Common wet-belt models include Fiesta (from 2012), Focus, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport and Mondeo 1.0 EcoBoost. Puma 1.0 and many 2018-on facelifts may use the later chain cam drive. Ask us and we will check your car.

A quick check: turbo at the front of the bay usually means wet belt; turbo at the bulkhead usually means chain. We still confirm from the vehicle, not the number plate alone.

Even on some revised engines the oil pump can still be driven by a small belt in oil. If that applies to your car we will say so on the quote.

Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt replacement: what we do

On a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, the timing belt runs inside the engine, in the oil. When the rubber breaks down, small particles can block the oil pick-up and starve the engine of oil, which is why the belt is replaced on time. We replace the timing belt and the oil pump belt, fit a new water pump and front case water seal, renew the crank front seal, friction washer and crank bolt, and fit a new rocker cover gasket, oil filter and Ford-spec 5W20 oil. The oil pump is removed and checked, and the strainer filter is removed and cleaned.

The job is £850 fixed at our Royston workshop. We quote first and collect your car free within 5 miles. Every wet belt replacement comes with our own 12-month / 12,000-mile parts and labour warranty, honoured at our Royston and Swindon workshops.

When to book it

Ford originally talked about a long service life. In local short-trip use we would rather change the belt between 60,000 and 80,000 miles, or at the first cold rattle, than wait for a light on the dash.

Typical early signs: metallic rattle from cold, oil pressure warning, rough idle, or debris already in the oil. If the belt has shed into the strainer the engine can be starved of oil. A replacement engine is a much bigger bill than £850.

EcoBoost questions

How long does it take?

Plan on your vehicle being with us for one working day. Drop it off before 9am and it's generally ready the same day. If a Friday job isn't finished that day, we'll complete it on Saturday so it's ready to collect. For a booked weekend job, drop it off by 9am on Saturday and it'll be completed by Sunday.

Do you replace the water pump as standard?

Yes. The water pump is included in the £850, along with the front case water seal.

Will a later Puma or Fiesta need this?

Later Pumas and Fiestas mostly use a timing chain, though the oil pump is still driven by a small belt in oil and the earliest cars may have the wet belt. Send the registration first. See our Puma and Fiesta pages.

What oil do you put back?

Ford-spec 5W20 for this engine. That is part of the £850.
